Kanha National Park, also known as the Kanha Tiger Reserve, is the largest national park in Madhya Pradesh. Kanha is a major feature of MP Tourism and has been the inspiration for the construction of the Rudyard Kipling building - The Jungle Book.

The expanded wildlife sanctuary is one of India's most important tiger reserves. It is located on the Maikal range in Satpura Hills and extends to the Mandala and Kalaghat district.

Kanha Tiger Reserve

The Kanha Tiger Reserve is a natural habitat with attractive vegetation and forests with high plateaus. The home of the Royal Indian Tigers, the Kanha Tiger Reserve is famous for being the first tiger in India to have a mascot - Bhoorsingh the Barasingha. Besides tigers, you can also find foxes and wild boars around the grasslands. The plain of Bamhnidadar is home to birds of prey. The tiger park has Sondar Tank irrigation holes, Babathenga Tank, and the Kanha Museum.

Facts of the Kanha Tiger Reserve

The Kanha National Park area covers 1945 sq. Km. km including Maikal hills and buffer areas around the same. The area extends to several neighboring villages and districts.

In 1879, the land was announced a reserve forest and in 1933, it was re-illustrate as a wildlife sanctuary. It was only in 1955, that Kanha was awarded the title of nature reserve. In 1973, it became the official tiger for tigers. As of today, it is considered one of the most beautiful wildlife destinations in the world.

Currently, the national park is divided into two protected areas - Hallon, which covers 250 sq. km. and Banjar, covering 300 sq. km. Together, with the Pench Sanctuary, it forms the Kanha Tiger Reserve.

 


Flora in Kanha National Park

The forest areas here are made up of 70 species of deforested forests and are home to more than 200 species of flowering plants. Trees such as Sal, bamboo, Tendu, Saja, Palas, Mahua, Achar, etc. A remarkable tree called the Indian ghost tree is found here.

Animals in the Kanha Tiger Reserve

Kanha National Park is the proud home of Barasingha which is also a state animal. The wetland deer in Kahna National is a rare and endangered species and is only found in these forests. But tigers here put this place on the map of the wildlife world. According to a recent study, the total number of tigers here is 150 (adult and young).

Besides deer and tigers, you can also find other animals here such as Panther, Chital, Sambar deer, Blackbuck, Barking deer, Chousingha, Gaur, Langur, Wild pig, Jackal, Sloth bear, Wild dog. Reptiles such as python, Indian cobra, common rat snake, fan throated lizard, Kraits etc. are also common. Forests are also home to more than 300 species of fish and birds.

By train

The nearest railway station is located in Jabalpur, 150KM away. From there, you can take a bus, book a taxi, or rent a car, to get there.

You can visit the national park by road. nearby more cities like Jabalpur, Nagpur, Indore, Bhopal, Raipur etc. There are regular public and private buses from all these areas.

By plane

The nearest airport is in Jabalpur, approximately 130KM. From the airport, you can book a taxi or rent a car to get here.

1. Mukki Location

• How to Get There - The second area of the park is located at 65KM from the main Kanha area. You can get there by Jeep or by private car.

• Best Duration to Visit - October to February, March to June

2. Kisli Zone

• How to get there - Part of the larger Kanha area, this area is located 8KM from the main entrance. You can take a jeep, a canter, an elephant ride, or your private car to get there.

• Best Duration to Visit - October to February, March to June.

Great time to visit Kanha National Park

The climate of Kanha National Park is generally hot and humid. Summers are hard and the rainy season gets a lot of rain. The park is open from mid-October until the end of June.
